Historic OIL PAINTING Huntsville Alabama Spring 1845 Sallie Cobb Antique Vintage

  
Rare and unique painting by Sallie B. She was commissioned to do this work in oil. Cobb indicated she rarely worked in oil but agreed to do it. She included a fascinating 2-page handwritten letter (signed) to go with the painting that discussed her research, history of the spring, as well as caverns of downtown Huntsville. Painting has attached card dated Oct. 1973, titling the painting as "Huntsville Spring - 1845", No 3-178. As the letter is dated 1975, it probably took Ms. Cobb a couple of years to complete the painting, and she may have provided the letter following completion. The painting provides a historic view of Big Springs (originally Huntsville Spring) in downtown Huntsville, AL (in Big Springs International Park). Included in the scene is the First National Bank building built in 1838 and the spring itself. Framed work measures nearly 42-1/2" wide x 31" high x 1-3/4 deep. Canvas alone measures just over 37-1/2" wide x 26" high. From a smoke free home. Listing is for the framed painting with original letter.
