This is a gorgeous and incredibly Fine Antique Old California Plein Air Landscape Oil Painting on canvas, by esteemed early German - American, Palm Springs, California Impressionist painter, Anton Gutknecht 1907 - 1988. This artwork likely dates to the 1950's - early 1960's and depicts a majestic and serene California landscape scene. Delicately rendered mountain peaks loom overhead, while intricately painted pine trees and a calm stream are visible. The mastery of Gutknecht at the Impressionist art style is paramount in this particular work. This manor sized artwork is approximately 34 3/4 x 58 3/4 inches including frame.

Actual artwork is approximately 24 x 48 1/4 inches. Very good condition for age, with some light edge wear and material loss to the original period ornate gilded frame, and a few small pinhole tears (which have been repaired,) and a few light scuffs to the painted canvas please see photos. Anton Gutknecht was born in Dusseldorf, Germany in 1907 and died in 1988. He studied in Dusseldorf, Munich, and Hamburg, and instructed for many years at Vienna's Royal Academy before moving to southern California where he settled in Palm Springs.

Gutknecht has traveled extensively over the world, painting a wide variety of subjects. His works have won prizes in international competitions in Vienna, Paris, Rome, Naples, and Venice. His paintings are a mixture of realism with an idealistic beauty. Some of his Southern California scenes were reproduced as commercial prints. A 1980 book published by Foster Art Books titled "Painting Landscapes and Seascapes by Anton Gutknecht" brought him recognition in the United States.

It also states that as many as 2 million prints were made of his work. I have seen European scenes by him, but most were of California. He was represented by "The Art Center Gallery" 1492 South Coast Highway Laguna Beach, California. Anton Gutknecht a listed Artist, was born and died in Dusseldorf, Germany.
